  • Active Substances:
  • Inactivated Paramyxovirus type 1 (Newcastle disease virus), strain La Sota: ≥ 7.0 log₂ haemagglutination inhibition (HI) units
  • Inactivated Pigeon Herpesvirus 1 (PHV-1), strain V298/70: ≥ 1.0 log₂ virus neutralization (VN) units

  • Preservative: Thiomersal

DESCRIPTION

PHARMAVAC COLUMBI 2 is an inactivated bivalent oil-emulsion vaccine for the active immunization of pigeons against paramyxovirus type 1 (PPMV-1) and pigeon herpesvirus 1 (PHV-1) infections .

Pigeon Paramyxovirus Type 1 (PPMV-1) is an antigenic and host variant of the Newcastle Disease Virus (NDV) that can infect pigeons of all ages and cause severe economic losses in the pigeon industry

The La Sota strain is a well-established vaccine strain widely used in poultry; however, studies indicate that vaccines based on chicken-origin La Sota may not provide complete protection against prevalent PPMV-1 strains due to antigenic differences

Pigeon Herpesvirus 1 (PHV-1) is another significant pathogen affecting pigeons, causing respiratory distress, conjunctivitis, and immunosuppression, which can predispose birds to secondary infections

INDICATIONS

PHARMAVAC COLUMBI 2 is indicated for the active immunization of pigeons to:

  • Reduce mortality and clinical signs associated with paramyxovirus type 1 (PPMV-1) infection
  • Mitigate the severity of clinical signs, gross lesions, and virus shedding caused by pigeon herpesvirus 1 (PHV-1)

DOSAGE & ADMINISTRATION

Dosage:

  • 0.3 ml per pigeon, regardless of age or size
  • Each vial (30 ml) contains 100 doses

Route of Administration:

  • Subcutaneous injection in the dorsal region of the neck
  • Inject with a sterile needle, avoiding the head region

Preparation Before Use:

  • Warm the vaccine to room temperature (approximately +22°C) before administration
  • Shake the vial thoroughly before use and occasionally during administration
  • Use only clean, sterile syringes and needles
  • Use appropriately graduated syringes to ensure accurate dosing

Vaccination Schedule:

  • Primary Vaccination: One dose from 4 weeks of age
  • Onset of Immunity: 3 weeks after vaccination
  • Duration of Immunity: 12 months for the paramyxovirus component
  • Revaccination: Annually for paramyxovirus protection
  • For birds in breeding situations with high PHV-1 pressure, more frequent revaccination may be considered

CONTRAINDICATIONS & PRECAUTIONS

  • Do not vaccinate unhealthy birds - only healthy pigeons should be vaccinated
  • Avoid accidental self-injection - the oil adjuvant may cause adverse reactions in humans
  • Do not freeze - freezing destroys the vaccine emulsion
  • Use within 4 hours after broaching - discard any unused vaccine after this time
  • Keep out of reach of children
  • Do not use after the stated expiry date
  • Administer under standard aseptic conditions

ADVERSE REACTIONS

  • A small, temporary swelling may develop at the injection site, which typically resolves within a few weeks

  • If adverse reactions occur, consult a veterinarian
